Welcome

The early settlers of Parachute Battlement Mesa had recreation and entertainment that involved helping neighbors build a cabin, ‘get togethers’ at neighbors for holidays, school and church picnics and even horse racing. The school house was used for dances and music was furnished by local townsfolk.

As for the kids; the children made up games, such as playing house, fashioning a rope swing to a tree, sledding on homemade sleds or wrestling. Often at Christmas there would be a play with young thespians showing off their acting skills.

Even though the population has fluctuated dramatically since then, with the original plans catered for population growth rates from the oil shale boom of 1981-1982, the dedication to the area has never faltered. The opportunity that PBMPRD had to form such a district was unique; and it is not often that recreation districts have the good fortune of having private oil shale industry build recreation infrastructure.

Prior to 2016 PBMPRD consisted primarily of sports programs. Effective January 2016 the Grand Valley Recreation Center and Battlement Mesa Golf Club were transferred to PBMPRD. The responsibility for operations and management of these entities was achieved without incurring indebtedness to the tax payer.
